Isotopic Techniques For Assessment of Groundwater Discharge to the Coastal Ocean

چکیده
One of the persistent uncertainties in establishing marine geochemical mass balances is evaluating the influence of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the ocean. Our long-term goal is to develop geochemical tools (e.g., radon and radium isotopes) to quantify the magnitude of SGD on a local to regional scale. Improvements in field-based analytical devises is also sought in order to allow evaluations on a more time efficient basis. Since there is no standard methodology for measurement of groundwater flow into the ocean, we are actively involved in coordinating and participating in assessment intercomparisons.

A carbon isotope method to quantify groundwater discharge at the land-sea interface
We present a new method to characterize and quantify groundwater discharge to estuaries and the coastal ocean. Using data from the Pages Creek estuary in the Cape Fear region of southeastern North Carolina, we show that the concentration and carbon isotopic composition (D14C and d13C values) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) can provide a tracer of a single, well-defined component of the surf...
متن کاملThe effect of submarine groundwater discharge on the ocean.
The exchange of groundwater between land and sea is a major component of the hydrological cycle. This exchange, called submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), is comprised of terrestrial water mixed with sea water that has infiltrated coastal aquifers. The composition of SGD differs from that predicted by simple mixing because biogeochemical reactions in the aquifer modify its chemistry. To emph...
متن کاملComposition and flux of groundwater from a California beach aquifer: Implications for nutrient supply to the surf zone
The coastal, unconfined aquifer at Huntington Beach, California contains saline groundwater (33 psu) adjacent to the water line, and a brackish groundwater (BGW) mixing zone (3–9 psu) approximately 50m from the water line. According to salinity and water isotope analyses, the BGW composition varies spatially in the alongshore direction. Measurements obtained from two BGW wells indicate this wat...
متن کاملGeological controls and tidal forcing of submarine groundwater discharge from a confined aquifer in a coastal sand dune system
[1] Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the ocean is increasingly recognized as an important component of land-ocean interaction. Numerous geological settings may be the source of terrestrially derived SGD, including spatially extensive sand dune systems, which are a common coastal setting in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions throughout the world. Within the catchment of the G...
متن کاملInvestigation of submarine groundwater discharge
Coastal hydrogeologists and oceanographers now recognize the potentially significant contribution that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could make to the coastal ocean. SGD may be both volumetrically and chemically important to coastal water and chemical budgets. A worldwide compilation of observed SGD shows that groundwater seepage from the land to the ocean occurs in many environments al...
